International Data Base (IDB) Tutorial

The International Data Base (IDB) is a free and official tool from the U.S. Census Bureau that offers:

• Population projections for more than 200 countries
• Distribution by sex and age from 1950 to 2100
• Indicators such as birth rate, mortality, migration, and growth

1. Visit: IDB Dashboard
2. No registration or download required
3. Click on “By Country” to start

1. On the left side, select a country (e.g., "Brazil")
2. Choose the desired year (available from 1950 to 2100)
3. The graphs will update automatically

The data includes population pyramid, age structure, and growth rates.

• Population pyramid: compares men and women by age group
• Growth rate: shows the evolution of the population year by year
• Numerical summary: total population, fertility rate, life expectancy

• Download data in CSV for external analysis
• Compare countries with each other in the “Compare Countries” tab
• View tabulated data in “Tables” with export option

Example: Analyze the projected population of Nigeria in 2050

1. Select “Nigeria” in the left menu
2. Choose the year 2050
3. Observe that the pyramid shows a wide base = young population
4. The total population exceeds 400 million
5. Useful for companies with products aimed at youth or urban expansion

• Combine IDB data with tools like Statista, UNCTAD, or Export Potential Map
• Ideal for potential demand analysis, entry strategies, and report justification
