Load Calculator Tutorial - SeaRates

Calculate space utilization in containers and configure your load optimally

1. What is Load Calculator?

Load Calculator is a free tool from SeaRates that allows you to simulate how to organize products or packages inside a container or truck. It is very useful for:

  • Optimizing space in international transport
  • Reducing logistics costs by better stowage
  • Avoiding waste of volume or overweight
Note: It allows simulating loading in 20", 40", 40" HC containers, pallets, and other formats.

2. Access and first steps

  1. Access: searates.com/en/load-calculator
  2. You don't need to register to do simulations
  3. You can change the language from the top menu

3. Load configuration

You must enter the information of the package or product:

  • Dimensions (length, width, height) in cm or inches
  • Weight per unit
  • Quantity of units

Click “Add” to add various types of cargo.

Tip: You can easily duplicate, edit, or delete packages from the table below.

4. Container selection

  • Select a container type: 20 ft, 40 ft, 40 HC, European pallet, etc.
  • The tool will show a 3D plan with the simulation of the occupied space
  • Includes statistics: total volume, total weight, % utilization

You can switch between 2D, 3D views and modify the stacking orientation.

5. Practical example

Example: 500 boxes of 40x30x20 cm and 10 kg each

  1. Enter those dimensions in cm
  2. Set the quantity: 500
  3. Select “40 ft container”
  4. The simulation will show if they fit in a single container or how many you need

You will see the occupied space, total weight, and suggestions for better distribution.

6. Download and export

  • Click on the “Download” button to generate a load report
  • You can also take a screenshot of the 3D plan to send to customers or carriers

It is useful for logistics, purchasing, customers, or preparing documentation prior to shipment.

7. Final tips

  • Always check the maximum permissible weight per container
  • Use this tool along with Incoterms and rates to simulate real operations
  • Ideal for justifying rates or correctly sizing your international offers
